Switchover to new harvest 2019

Our maltings will start soon to switch over to the new harvest. Our switchover schedule and the percentage of new harvest are given in the table.

Harvest information

Germany

2019 was still affected by the draught of 2018 and the low precipitation in the first 4 months. Fortunately, the cool and rainy month of May averted the worst. Nevertheless, water reserves in the deeper soil layers have still not been refilled, this would require a period of persistent precipitation in the coming weeks.

Autumn harvest benefitted from humidity in winter so that two-row winter malting barley, relatively homogeneous in terms of yield and quality, could be harvested. The spring barley harvest is significantly more homogeneous in terms of yield and quality. Protein levels and grading in particular fluctuate greatly. The degree of grading of spring barley 2019 is thus significantly lower than in the year before. One has to be prepared to accept a worse malt grading.

Based on the harvest forecast of Deutscher Raiffeisenverband of August 2019 and our in-house barley investigations, the table shows our first estimate of the 2019 malting barley harvest in Germany.

The next few weeks will show the cultivation strategy of growers with regard to current climate development. Will autumn sowing be increased to the detriment of spring sowing in order to be able to benefit optimally from humidity in winter; and how will spring barley fare in terms of risk assessment and growing decision?

France

As a result of a decrease in rape sowing in France, the acreage under cultivation with spring barley rose by about 100,000 ha in France. The barley harvest thus rose by about 500,000 t. The Planet variety was predominately grown on the additional acreage. Protein levels are very low in some regions, and a difference is made between barley having protein levels of at least 9.5 % or below 9.5 %.

Denmark

As had been expected, the acreage under cultivation dropped by about 170.000 ha. In terms of yield, the harvest is slightly below average though quality is satisfactory.

Czech Republic

For the third time in a row, the harvest has been disastrous. Widely fluctuating protein levels and very poor gradings and, in some instances unsatisfactory yields, weigh heavy on growers. Maltsters in the Czech Republic assume that, due to quality issues, they have to import malting barley. Another drop in acreage cultivated with spring barley is anticipated.

Great Britain

Great Britain usually exports some 300.000 t of malting barley and sells it on the European continent, about half of which goes to Germany. In view of the uncertainties of the impending Brexit, nobody expects that malting barley can still be exported without constraints after October 31st, 2019. The British malting barley harvest is thus not reflected in the considerations but, based on information available, average quality and a reduced acreage under cultivation can be expected.
